People StyleWatch's 1st Annual Denim Awards!

The November issue of People StyleWatch has hit the news stands and it is one that you denim lovers will not want to miss. It features the awesome Zoe Saldana (Colombiana, Avatar and more) on the cover but most importantly, to me at least, it includes their first annual Denim Awards!!!

Over 700 pairs were tested in order to come up with 25 winners. The categories include best butt boost (WOO WOO!), sexiest, best for work, most slimming and more.

I had the pleasure of communicating with People Style Watch's Senior Market Editor, Marissa Rubin, who was kind enough to answer a few questions.

1. What made People StyleWatch decide to acknowledge denim in such a big way this year?

We’ve always acknowledged denim. In fact, we’ve given more denim credits than any other fashion monthly. It’s part of our core DNA, as well as a staple in our reader’s wardrobe—they live in their jeans! Therefore, this felt like a natural progression to kick off an annual denim awards blowout that would offer great service to our reader’s and really stake our claim in the denim market.

2. The idea of having to try on 700 pairs of jeans and picking out my favorites sounds like fashion heaven to me but what was it like for you more normal people?

We had over 40 people try on the 700 pairs—most of whom do not work directly in fashion—and they were BEYOND THRILLED to participate. Many said, “it was like having a department store come to them.” When you think about it, most people have a favorite brand (and usually a style within it) and never stray to try something new—possibly something better. But through our try-ons, everyone discovered a new jean—and the majority went out and purchased them right after!!!

3. Were those of you responsible for picking the best jeans all around the same body type or were different shapes and sizes represented?

Our try-on subjects were all different shapes and sizes. We had petites, plus, athletic, curvy, boyish, pear, tall, etc represented within each category to make sure that the results were accurate across a wide-range of physiques. What was astonishing was that there was always a clear winner/favorite amongst the varying body types and sizes. We truly found universally flattering jeans!!!

4. Were there any jeans that you just loved that did not make the list?

No. But I had predictions that a certain jean would win in a specific category, and it wouldn’t even place. Yet then it’d be considered for another category and win. It was unbelievable how everything ultimately came together

I was sweating just imagining myself getting to judge hundreds of pairs of jeans. Jean Tester would definitely be my dream job but I have yet to see that job title listed on Career Builder.

American Apparel's New Jeans For Men

American Apparel just launched their first-ever men's jean that they've added to their popular women's denim collection.

The jeans are called Regular Fit 100 and they were designed, cut sewed and washed in American Apparel's facility in Los Angeles.

According to George Atlan, Director of Denim at American Apparel, the Regular Fit 100s are a "truly authentic pair of jeans" which "the market has lacked for a long time."

They are meant to be worn at the ankles according to the American Apparel website. (Yikes!)

Pajama Jeans...Really?

I was flipping through channels this morning while my kids were brushing their teeth when I happened to stop on the Home shopping Network. The slick sales lady-you know the one who pretends to be your friend but then you realize that she can't be your friend because her sole job is to separate you from your money- mentioned that HSN had sold over 24,000 pairs of, get this, Pajama Jeans.

Apparently women across the country are interested in looking good and being comfortable at the same time. The absolute nerve of them. In french the saying is "pour etre belle il faux souffrire"
Which translates to "To be beautiful one must suffer." I never liked or believed in that saying but I'm not sure that I'm ready to wear PJ jeans.

Anyway here is a little info about them.

*They come in bootleg or skinny
*They have no pockets or zippers
*They are made of a cotton and spandex blend called DormiSoft
*They come complete with brass rivets to give them the jean look.
*They are supposed to be incredibly comfortable
*They cost around $40

The model looks pretty good in them but I might be a little too denim obsessed to try these out.

The Pennsylvania State Police has issued an Amber Child Abduction Alert for the Southwest Detective Division, Philadelphia Police Department, Philadelphia County.

Philadelphia Police are searching forÂ Karyim MUHAMMAD, a black non-hispanic boy, age 5, 3 feet tall, 40 pounds, black hair, brown eyes, wearing a gray polo shirt, blue jean shorts and black sneakers. He was abducted by a black male, approximately 25 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall, 180 pounds, with a full mustache and beard, wearing a black baseball cap, a white shirt, black cargo pants and black shoes. He was last seen being forcefully led away by the adult black male, travelling on foot, north on 53rd Street from Pine Street, at approximately 6 p.m. on 08/15/11.

Off 5th, Saks Fifth Avenue's outlet store is taking an extra 50% off all clearance shoes. Sounds like a great time to purchase some big name sandals that will carry you throught the remainder of the summer season and beyond.

I love a bargain. I purchased my very first pair of premium denim at Off Fifth. They were a pair of James Jeans and they cost me $40.00! TO this day I believe that they were my best fitting jeans ever.

Happy 4th Of July

I don't call it independance day because quite a few people lost their freedom after this country gained their independance but I had a wonderful holiday weekend just the same.

My family and I watched the firework presentation outside of Sesame Place. We didn't have the energy to venture downtown Philadelphia, fighting crowds and traffic. We instead sat among a fairly large group of mostly families on a stretch of grass across the way from the famed theme park and enjoyed their wonderful show that lit up the sky and excited us all.

My daughter cracked me up after the show was over and all that was left were the smoky clouds left behind by the firework display. She said to me in a very serious tone. "I enjoyed that but I kind of feel sorry for the sky."

Despite it's growing pains this young country it is filled with remarkable, giving and loving people of all colors and creeds who enjoy incredible freedoms. And when are backs are against the wall as they were after 9/11 we came out swinging and took care of each other and shed many tears for the innocent lives that were lost. That is the America that I love.

I was online searching for a pair of, reasonably priced, Seven jeans and the search had me a bit frustrated. I don't own a single pair of them because the few pairs that I tried on either were too expensive or did not flatter my figure as well as I had hoped they would but I decided that if the price was right I'd give Sevens another shot.

I happened on a comparison shopping site called Canada Post, Yes as in the our neighbors to the north, and I was surprised to find Seven jeans for as low as $63.00! I was excited because I could actually afford them and the the stores that carried them were in the U.S.

They are a pair of skinny stretch jeans and skinny's usually look great on me, especially in a dark wash.

Since I was also in the market for a pair of casual cargo shorts for my hubby, he's off for the summer and needs to learn how to relax, I figured I might as well search for them on the sight as well. It saved me from spending a mint on gas going from store to store looking for them. I found the pair below and there were quite a few to choose from.

Summer Search For Hot Sandals

I saved my pennies all winter long in anticipation of splurging on some high end sandals this summer season. Prada, one of my favorite brands has always been out of reach for me because the prices were often just too steep but I paid a visit to Bluefly.com and they did not let me down. They offer plenty of items for women as well as men including sunglasses, handbags, dresses, denim and tops.

Their selection of sandals are off the chain and the styles are just about as hot as the temperatures outside, can you say sizzle?

There were plenty of Prada shoes to choose from including wedges, strappy sandals and kitten heels and they are available in gorgeous colors like teal, hazelnut, Navy and Fire (red orange). The prices are at least 20% off of the original retail prices which is great because, for me, paying full price is out of the question until my husband gets drafted into the NBA or I finally get discovered as being America's next top model. Did I hear a chuckle?
Anyway, you don't have to be a model to dress like one and if you are a savvy shopper you will discover the best places to find high end deals that us fashion obsessed but cash poor gals crave.

Bluefly literally has hundreds of designers to choose from including Christian Louboutin, Cole Haan, Gucci and Jimmy Choo but I'll have to save up for those next summer. 2011 is my Prada year.

Beyonce attended the annual Met Gala with her galant hubby Jay Z and was booed by the insane Paparazzi that yelled out posing instructions and harassed her as she entered the event. Her Emilio Pucci gown was difficult to walk in and extended the duration of the ordeal.

I don't know how celebrities put up with these guys. They are Uber obnoxious. I might have committed a paparazzi murder right there in front of all those darn camaras.

Amazing Denim Repair

I just found a site called Denim Therapy that, based on the before and after pics on their site, does a wonderful job repairing your favorite jeans. They say that they don't just fix jeans they "rebuild relationships". I can really relate to that because I have a very good relationship with all of my favorite jeans I don't want any rips coming between us.

The web address is www.denimtherapy.com and they charge $7 per inch to repair your jeans. You just send them the jeans and they will send them back in two to three weeks. They are based in my hometown of Brooklyn New York and the shipping is around $12 for the first pair and $6 for each additional pair. They even fix jeans for jean lovers who live abroad and the shipping is around $18 per pair.

Since some of us have paid well over $100 for our jeans the cost seems well worth it. I have a pair of 1921's that need mending. Hmmm...

Spring Shopping Time Is Here!

I can feel that warm weather is not too far off and I'm getting excited about it. Spring shopping time is here!
Even though I know that bright colors in the winter time can be a pick me up I don't often wear them until it starts warming up outside- go figure.

I visited Bluefly for some fashion ideas and I was not disappointed. I am so totally ready to pack away my grey, black and deep burgundy tops and replace them with the vivid and bright hues that were popping off of the pages on the site. I am ready to overdose on some color.

There were pretty spring and summer dresses by Frenchconnection, BCBGMaxazaria, and sandals that ranged from cute and comfortable to sexy but probably not as comfortable from designers like Michael Kors and Giuseppi Zanotti whose shoes come in some very exciting "flavors".
There was even a cool pair of denim clogs by Stuart Weitzman that I can see myself in right now.

I was drooling over the gorgeous handbags and accessories that the site had to offer. I checked out names like Cole Haan, Gucci and Prada. Now if I could only hit the lottery before March 20.

Have you ever wondered if there were any real bargains on comparison shopping sites?

Well, I had the opportunity to check out Become.com and I was surprised at the range of products that they had to offer from clothing and accessories to electronics to pet products and everything in between. Right off the bat the biggest benefit is that you can find great prices without having to go from site to site. You get to compare deals from large department stores to smaller online boutiques without having to go from site to site. I appreciate that because I never make a purchase without making sure that I can't buy the item some place else for less.

If you haven't already figured it out I am a denim fiend so you know that was the first thing I looked for. To my surprise I was able to find every popular denim brand that I could think of including Sevens, True Religion, Hudsons and Paige Premium Denim and even newer brands like Charley 5.0. To give you an idea of what the deals were like I actually found a pair of James Cured Jeans in my size for an unbelievable $58. If I wasn't in my saving money mode I would purchased them for sure. I also noticed some sassy animal print dresses as well as some classic and comfortable Alfred Dunner coordinates.

I got really excited when I checked out their footwear. They had everything from sexy high end strappy sandals that would make Carrie Bradshaw drool to hot slouch boots to keep you looking fashionable and warm in the fall and winter seasons.

The site is easy to navigate because you just have to type in what you are looking for in the search bar and voila! Your items come into view with the prices clearly marked.

Inception won for Sound Mixing, Sound Editing (is there a difference?) and best movie to make you feel like you missed something when it first started. Just checking to see if you were really paying attention It also won for best Visual Effects.

I've purchased a few pairs of jeans from them including my very first pair of premium denim which was a sweet fitting pair of James jeans that cost me an unbelievable $40 .That poor pair of jeans were finally put to rest last year (sniffle sniffle). My most recent purchase from Off 5th was a pair of blinged out True Religion bootcuts in a perfect dark wash which cost $100.

2011 Grammy Fashions Ho Hum

The 53 annual Grammy awards was held on Valentine's day this year. The big winner was Lady Antebellum with 5 Grammy's including record of the year and song of the year. Jayz won 3 Grammy's and Eminem won 2 out of 10 nominations. Esperanza Spalding the 23 year old newcomer one for best new artist upsetting Justin Bieber and Drake.
I was not extremely impressed by any of the outfits that were worn to music's biggest night. There were some scandalous ones and some pure crazy outfits too but nothing that made me drool and wish for a bigger paycheck like.

They have created the new Earharts named, after the famous pilot Amelia Earhart whose plane went down in 1937 when she attempted to be the first woman to fly around the world. Unfortunately she was never heard from again.

Okay, so what's more important, wearing the hottest trend or showing off your creativity by sporting your own personal style?

I know how great it feels to be wearing something that the masses considers fashionable and makes you appear to be in the know but don't you get a bigger bang when you look awesome in an outfit that the majority of people would never have thought to put together?

I enjoyed the times when I went to work wearing an outfit that I created based solely on what I like and then a few days later I spied some ladies wearing a close variation of the outfit. Loved that!

This season the hot trends in jeans are supposed to be the flare legs and bell bottoms. Who the heck decided that? I absolutely hate bell bottoms unless they fall somewhere between the knee and the anlkle and I don't like flare leg jeans unless they are worn with heels and are hemmed high enough to see the heels but the traditional flare legs and bell bottoms are my biggest jean nightmare after high waisted jeans.

Am I supposed to wear flare leg jeans because some fashion guru had extra jean material and decided that flare leg was the way to go? Heck to the no!!!

Should people with gorgeous legs put away mini skirts because someone with stretch marks decides that mini skirts aren't in? Alright so I'm not absolutely sure how the traditional trendmakers decide what is trendy but I do know that Katie Holmes threw on a pair of Tom Cruises jeans and rolled them up at the bottom and started the boyfriend jean trend all on her own. She didn't wait for some out of touch fashion guru to tell her what to wear.

Go out and express yourself by wearing what looks good on you. Be creative and start the next sexy trend. Creativity is sexy as heck so do the damn thang!

Hem Your Jeans The The Easy Way

Hooray! I found an easy way to hem jeans on youtube, without cutting yet still utilizing your jeans original hem. It looks a bit strange at firts but I tried it myself and it really works. Big shout out to

You will need a sewing machine but you don't have to be an expert. I barely know how to sew straight and my hems still came out great. I feel so free because I once paid a professional $20 to do this for me and now I don't have to anymore.

I know that once you see that you need a sewing machine you assume that it is going to be difficult but it really isn't. If I can do it anyone can. I actually learned how to thread a bobbin for the first time on the same day that I proceeded to hem my first pair of jeans. I am psyched. I hope this will help some of you too.

The Christmas season is upon us and everyone, including me, is in a festive mood. To celebrate my holiday spirit I am going to make sure that I look as good as I feel. I finally got the True Religion jeans that I wanted and at a great price and now I am going to get some great make-up to ensure that I look fab-u-lous. I am going to be showing off my best holiday lips.

I checked out Nars cosmetics who have a ridiculous amount of options to promote soft, kissable holiday lips. Whether you are the low key type who prefers soft subtle shades or the high drama mama who wants shiny lips that demand attention or anywhere in between consider visiting Narscosmetics.com.

They offer lipstick that comes in a variety of pretty shades in either satin, semi-matte, or sheer. Some of the sheer choices looked like they were sprinkled with pixie dust by Tinker Belle herself.

They also offer lip lacquer which they say is made of a high shine formula with great ingredients like vitamin A, vitamin E and natural oils.

You can also choose a lipgloss which comes in a tube with a wand in gorgeous shiny colors.

All three of these lip coverage options cost $24.00 each. If money was not an issue there are least 15 different shades that I would like to try out. Since it is I'll probably have to narrow it down to three. C'est la vie.

The holidays are finally here! It is definitely time for all the shoe lovers out there (myself included) to step into our shoe closets or to reach into the small shoe rack in our tiny closets and pull out, polish and shine the best of our footwear.

Most fashion conscious women and men realize that you have to pair your best holiday attire with awesome shoes to match. I recently visited Bluefly.com to check out their offerings and it was an, absolute, soleful experience. Their shoe offering is ridiculous and you can shop by category or by shoe designer of which they have well over 100 to choose from. They have boots from thigh highs to suede ankle booties, stilettos and studded strappy sandals that would satisfy Carry Bradshaw from Sex And The City.

Bluefly has 11 pages of Prada shoes, all from 16-46% off of regular retail. I can't afford most of them but I enjoyed drooling over them.

My favorite boots were a pair of Christian Louboutin boots with heels that I couldn't take on even for a million dollar bet but I'm sure some lucky girl with heel skills is rocking a pair right now.

The Cole Haan shoes are more in my price range and in my heel height range. I love them because they are attractive shoes and they can withstand the wear and tare that I put on shoes and still look good.

Improve Your Rear View

I'm always writing ways to make sure your rear looks great in jeans but what about your top half? Sometimes when I wear a tight fitting shirt I'm unhappy with the bra lines that inevitably rear their ugly little heads.
Luckily a little fashion bird made me aware of shapewear called Shapeez. The website is unbelievabra.com and they boast that Shapeez is the "end of visible bra lines and back fat"! That sounds extremely promising to me because I have actually had to put a few sexy tops back on the rack because they looked less than impressive from the back.

According to the site the seamless shapewear is designed to not only smooth out your back it also gives your boobs a lift and eliminates the dreaded muffin top for all around smoothness. That's all a fashionable girl could ever ask for.

Shapeez is quite pricey ranging from $75-$110 but according to the testimonials it is worth the money. Some have gone as far as to say that it is the best bra they've ever worn and that they would never buy another.

I'm seriously considering scraping my pennies together to give Shapeez a try.

I am a warm weather lover but doing little things for myself like updating my cosmetics bag of tricks make it a little easier to put up with the shorter days and cooler temperatures. Being a woman of color I only buy cosmetics from companies that either cater only to women of color or who offer a wide range of lovely colors that can be used to enhance the beauty of women of all races and ethnicities. NARS cosmetics offers a wide variety of lipstick shades and I'm ready to try something new and exciting for fall.

NARS also offers amazing shiny shades of lip lacquer that are made with some natural ingredients like Vitamin A, Vitamin E and Avocado oil. The colors are memorizing. I think Eros is my favorite.

It's definitely time for me to experiment with a some fierce lip gloss colors. NARS has a huge assortment of delicious shades to chose from.

I'm going to take the sting out of Fall with a fresh face and some shiny lips. Look out!

Denim Review: Curve Appeal

This is my first denim review and I have the pleasure of kicking off this new aspect of Designer Denim Science with a bang!

Curve Appeal is a brand new denim line created by the Mamiye Group that caters to the real women and encourages them to embrace their curves. The line was launched earlier this month at Nordstrom department stores and retails at an affordable $88-$98 a pair. The line is actually called denim shapewear and is the first of its kind. Women of all ages and body types will appreciate these thigh-slimming, bum-lifting jeans.

The jeans are currently available in three styles: Enchanting Skinny, Captivating Bootcut and Gorgeous Straight Leg and they come in a variety of washes. I had the good fortune of test driving a pair of Enchanting Skinnys in a dark blue.

I knew that Curve Appeal was on to something when my husband offered to take me to the movies on a week night and made one request: "wear the new jeans you just got." If you know anything about me you know that I am denim-obsessed and that I have upwards of 100 pairs of great fitting premium jeans in my closet so for him to make that request is a big deal.

Pros

*The jeans are extremely comfortable

* The skinny jeans are not so narrow at the ankles that you can barely stick your foot through them.

*The comfortable stretchy waistband allows you to enjoy a satisfying meal without having to unbutton the top button. (What? everybody deserves a satisfying meal)

* The dark blue wash is mesmerizing.
*The patented bottom booster really seems to work, and we all know that the rear view is what separates the sexy jeans from the work around the house jeans.
* Head Turnability: HIGH

Cons

The only con is that the tummy flattening panels felt a bit bulky to me and I was worried that they would also look bulky but in actuality the mirror did not reflect what I was feeling and the front of the jeans looked natural and flat.
I think I'm just not used to wearing shapewear and as the evening progressed I got used to the extra support.

Conclusion

Hooray for Curve Appeal!
My Enchanting Skinny Curve Appeal jeans are keepers and for $88-$98 I am going to pack up the kids and head to mall to try on the bootcuts and the straight legs.

Shoe Shopping For Fall

The only things I like about the end of summer are the upcoming holidays and fall shopping. I found a great place to shop for shoes just in time for back to school; it's called Jildor Shoes and the company has actually been in business for over sixty years! They carry close to a hundred brands of footwear including hot styles from Stuart Weitzman, Chloe, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Diane Von Furstenberg.

Their selection of shoes is out of this world. They carry flats, heels, sandals, sneakers and more. When it comes to boots , which are my fall favorites, they offer ankle boots, tall boots and everything in between. The site allows you to shop by category, style and even heel height and color to save time. I personally am in no hurry when I am shopping from the comfort of my own home and I get to drool over Tory Burch, Frye and Michael Kors designs.

If you are like me and saving money is a priority you will appreciate the sales section at Jildor. It is filled with styles from the same designers as the main section including Jeffrey Campbell, Cole Haan and Steve Madden at affordable prices.

Maroon 5 Lead Singer Launches New Clothing Line

Adam Levine, the lead singer of the band Maroon 5 has launched a new clothing line called 222. 222 is reported to be Levine's lucky number as well as part of the address of Maroon 5's recording studio.

If you are at all familiar with Maroon 5 you would have noticed that Levine has a very unique sense of style for a rocker, often sporting tailored suits while performing his elaborate dance moves. His line however is described as casual and free of embellishment and includes jeans, leather jackets and tee shirts for both men and women and silk dresses, knit tops and wraps for women.

Levine is embarking on this fashion adventure with his father Fred Levine who operated M. Frederic Boutiques in California for 30 years and with his cousin Sammi Cooper who ownes the facility where the clothing line will be produced.

I found this great video on Denimology of designer Loren Cronk making a pair of jeans. He actually cuts out fabric and makes a gorgeous pair of jeans in a 2 minute video. I was amazed by this and wanted to share it with you guys.

Mr. Cronk has a store in Brooklyn, NY-my hometown.

According to nbcny.com Mr. Cronk has jeans that range from $69-$600 for his custom collection.
The store is by appointment only from from Monday-Thursday and is open from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm on Friday to Sunday.

It is located at 82 Nassau Street, Brooklyn ,NY, 11222 in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn.

The jeans are very unique, attention getters thanks to the sexy fit and the considerable amount of bling on the back pockets. They often have the racy winged logo emblazoned above the back pockets in shiny silver or gold thread and are often heavily studded. They offer some more conservative styling but if you have the confidence and can handle your sexy, you might as well enjoy the head turning that you and your hot jeans will definitely cause.

When I attended fashion trade shows in NYC, Robin's booth was always jam-packed with buyers but only a certain, adventurous personality type will have the... guts to actually purchase and wear these. I have three pairs and I love them.

The things that are high on my real wish list include all children in the world being happy and healthy and safe and an amazing education for all kids that inspires a passion for learning.

That being said I can get back to my old friend Louis. My aunt, who lives in Paris, gave me my first and only Louis bag when I was bout 15 years old. I still have it and it still looks pretty good. But why did the people at Louis go and make a gorgeous denim bag in such a beautiful spring color? It's like they know that my two fashion obsessions are denim and bags and they put the two together to tempt me. Unfortunately for them, or maybe for me, this bag is soooooo far out of my price range that I can only be with it in my dreams.

I imagine that it looks great on my shoulder and I get some sandals to match and I wear a perfect springtime hairstyle and maybe a mini skirt.... Gotta love those daydreams.

Tyler Perry's much awaited sequel to Why Did I Get Married? called Why Did I Get Married Too? is in Theatres and it is an exciting movie to watch. It features some wonderful actors including Tyler Perry himself, Janet Jackson, Malik Yoba, Tasha Smith and many more.

This sequel lives up to it's predecessor because it has some comedic moments but it is also the type of drama that keeps you feeling tense as you await the resolution of the many exciting story lines that are unfolding. This film is not all fun and games and it takes you on an emotional roller coaster and you are sure to enjoy the ride thanks to the suberb acting and the very attractive cast.

Colcci is a hot Brazilian brand that came on the scene in 1986. Supermodel Gisele Budchen is the brands main female model since 2005. Bundchen who gave birth to her first child, Benjamin Brady, in December 2009is already back to modeling.

Colcci is heavily influenced by the hip hop culture as well as Mexican folk art and religious and historic images.

Warm Weather Count Down

As the days start to get longer and the weather begins to warm up Its the perfect time to start tightening up the abs and to start shedding any extra weight that was put on during the winter months.

I definitely need to get rid of at least five pounds before I can comfortably wear a swim suit and my favorite jean shorts.

Here are the simple weight loss tips that I follow to easily shed the extra weight without much sacrifice:

1. Walk every where. Walking, especially with a friend is an easy way to burn calories and enjoy good conversation.

2. Drink water. Replacing sugary drinks with water is a great and healthy way to reduce your daily calorie intake.

3. Eat more fruits and veggies. Keeping veggies and fruits within arms reach can help you avoid snacking on less healthy snacks.

4. Portion Control- Reduce the size of your helpings by a little bit and you'll be surprised that you can be perfectly satisfied eating a little bit less.

5. Stay away from fast food. If your kids demand fast food then order yourself a grilled chicken sandwich and replace the fries with a side salad.

6. Dance with your kids. Dancing is a fun and easy way to burn calories and your children are excellent dance partners because they have an endless supply of energy.

7. Picture It. Put up a picture of yourself at your ideal weight and remind yourself that you can look that way again.

Try these simple weight loss tips and watch the pounds melt away just in time for the Spring/Summer season.

Alexander McQueen: The Loss of A Great Fashion Designer

The fashion world is mourning the death of British fashion designer, Alexander McQueen was found dead in his home last Thursday, February 11, 2010 of an apparent suicide. He was reportedly depressed after the death of his mother on February 2, 2010. He was 40 years old.

Mr. Mcqueen was a talented and creative designer who was famous for putting on theatrical fashion shows that both thrilled and shocked attendees and pushing the envelope with his designs. In 1995 at his "Highland Rape" show, Mcqueen featured models in ripped dresses and skirts who appeared to have been attacked.

Mcqueen was considered a fashion genius and artist by many and he will be missed.

It was a huge night for the ladies at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards. Beyonce took home 6 Grammy's which is a record for a female artist. Taylor Swift took home four Grammy's including album of the year and, at the age of 20, she is the youngest artist to win the award.

There were some awesome performances and a wonderful tribute to Michael Jackson featuring Smokey Robinson, Celine Dion, Usher, Jennifer Hudson and Carrie Underwood

The Grammy Awards, dubbed Music's Biggest Night, was not only a great night for music but also a great night for fashion lovers. The stars were shining brightly, wearing designs by the biggest names in fashion including Emillio Pucci, Armani, Gucci and more.

That would be an ideal situation, for many of us, during these difficult financial times. Savvy shoppers in England have found a creative way to enhance their wardrobes and get rid of their unwanted clothing all on the same website. It's a vintage clothing community called Covert Candy. Membership to the community is free and the only thing you ever pay for is to ship your items to the person who has chosen to "purchase" them.

How It Works

First, register to join the Covert Candy community for free. Second, upload pictures and descriptions of the clothing, jewelry, purses and hats, that you are interested in parting with. Third, determine the value of the clothing. Next, mail the clothing to the customer who has ordered them. Once the articles of clothing have been received by the "buyer" your account is assigned the credits that your clothing was worth. Finally, shop on Covert Candy with the credits that were accumulated.

I think that this could be a wonderful way to acquire, unique, vintage clothes and an awesome way to keep clothing that is still in great condition out of landfills. It is also a great way to save money and still get to wear something fabulous that you didn't have to pay for.

Acquiring great clothing and helping the environment, sounds like a win-win situation to me.

Yele Haiti Boots

Popular recording artist and Haitian Activist Wyclef Jean has collaborated with Timberland to produce a new line boots made from eco-conscious materials that they call Earthkeepers Yelee Haiti Boots. The boots boast such features as organic canvas, recycled laces, soles made from Green Rubber and leather from silver rated tanneries.

Proceeds from the boots were originally going to be used to help reforestation efforts in Haiti but they have since been redirected to the earthquake relief efforts through Wyclef's Yele Haiti Foundation.

Wyclef has been doing serious charity work in Haiti long before the earthquake struck and I am confident that his work will continue despite allegations that were made against him regarding mismanagement of funds. The allegations were found to baseless and unfounded.

The Fashion Community Responds to The Crisis In Haiti

I can't begin to express how extremely proud and appreciative I am of the United States and the international community's outpouring of support, help and compassion towards Haiti. As I mentioned previously, both of my parents were born there and Haiti will always, hold a special place in my heart because, two of the best parents a girl could ever ask for, were raised there.

For as long as I can remember, Haiti has been in desperate need of assistance but now that the the need has escalated to the critical level, the world has responded in a big way. I, of course, wish that this disaster had never happened but I'm hopeful that all of this pain and suffering will be replaced by something good, maybe even something great and Haiti will finally be able to live up to it's full potential.

I have been unable to write about anything related to fashion since the tragedy until today. I am happy to announce that the fashion community has been doing their part to help the, battered, island nation in a variety of ways.

Here is a small sampling of the fashion communities response to the crisis that I got from Rachel Strugatz' column at the HuffingtonPost.com :

1. Luis Vuitton donated $100,000 on behalf of the company and it's employees to assist the Haitian Red Cross with purchasing supplies.

2. Calvin Klein is matching contributions of it's employees and is making a
corporate donation to Save The Children and more.

3. Ralph Lauren is donating clothing through Fashion Delivers.

4. Havaiainas sent footwear to Haiti via Soles4Souls and is donating a percentage of sales to the Red Cross.

5. MAC Cosmetics has donated $125,000 to three organizations in Haiti who will deliver medical care, food and supplies.

Many other fashion designers are donating a percentage of their sales and/or hosting benefits to help Haiti get on the road to recovery.

Major Earthquake In Haiti

I was moaning about having bounced a check due to an oversight when I found out that
The small island nation of Haiti, my parents' native country, was struck by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake 7 miles southwest of The capital of Port AU Prince. The quake hit today at around 5:00 Pm eastern standard time. Reports are sketchy but my understanding is that there is widespread damage with fallen buildings everywhere but no word available regarding casualties or injuries. According to CNN there were at least two aftershocks measuring 5. 9 and 5.5 and there is a lot of 'wailing' and there are many people in the streets who don't know where to go.

I am calling on all of you prayer warriors (we all have a little prayer warrior inside of us but we often don't realize it until we have something serious to pray about) to pray for the people in Haiti. The tiny country has endured it's share of tough times including devastating hurricanes and widespread poverty. Although Haiti has suffered much It's beauty and rich history can never be denied. It is the first and only black lead nation whose Independence was gained as a result of a successful slave rebellion against the French in 1804.

Time to stop focusing on my small problems and start praying for others.

Happy New Year everyone!

I am excited about entering in to a new year with a fresh start and positive outlook. I pray for many blessings and great things ahead for all of us.

I'm happy to start off the new year doing something different, discussing a new brand of premium denim called CJ jeans. The jeans debuted last summer and the designer is none other than Cookie Johnson the wife of popular ,former NBA superstar and current business man and TNT basketball commentator Magic Johnson.

Cookie, who has a degree in Retailing of Clothing and Textiles, decided to to enter the premium denim game out of frustration from not being able to find jeans that properly fit her curves. She says that she has created a more contoured jean with more room in the thighs and butt area that still fit nicely at the waist. The jeans also run from size 24 (2) to size 38 (18) which will accommodate a much larger population of women ,who come in all wonderful shapes and sizes, then most other premium denim brands do.

Cookie teamed up with denim guru Micheal Glasser, the brains behind Seven For All Mankind, Citizens of Humanity and owner of Rich and Skinny Jeans, to deliver a amazing lineup of great looking jeans that include bootcut, straightleg, highwaist and skinny styles.

Oprah has listed the jeans as one of her favorite things. I look forward to trying on a pair and letting you all know how it went.

What Makes Premium Denim So...Premium

During these trying economic times it is difficult to make expensive purchases without weighing the financial pros and cons. Is it worth it to pay for premium denim when you can, usually, buy less expensive jeans just about anywhere?

That is a question that anyone contemplating buying a pair has to answer individually, based on their personal financial situation and their priorities. I, of course, will happily offer my two cents on the matter.

Premium Denim and Regular Denim: Is there Really A Difference?

The answer is a resounding Yes! Having owned a premium denim boutique I can attest to the fact that there is are differences between premium denim and regular denim jeans. Here is a concise list of the differences.

Superior Material- most premium denim is made from superior more expensive, denim usually made in Japan, Italy or the United States.

Superior Styling- The makers of premium denim have the styling down to a science. There is nothing arbitrary about the pocket placement or washes that they use on every pair of jeans and it shows when you put them on. properly placed pockets can give the illusion of a rounder perkier butt without surgery. What can be better than that? Darker coloring around the thighs appears to shave inches off of you in all the right places. How much would you pay for that? Premium jeans are also often hand distressed and treated to get the desired unique look that many premium jeans have.

Superior Fit- The combination of flawless material and the scientific styling come together to create a more perfect fitting jean. When it comes to jeans, fit is everything and I have yet to come across a pair of regular jeans that fit me as well as my premium jeans do.

Confidence "Boostability" - Confidence usually comes from within but a few outward things like a great hairstyle and an amazing outfit can help to boost your confidence even more. Premium jeans definitely have confidence "boostability".

What About the High Price Tag?

If money is an issue for you as it usually is for me, I suggest outlet shopping or raiding the clearance rack. I paid only $40 for my first pair of Premium denim. It was a pair of James Jeans and when I looked at myself in the three way mirror I was extremely pleased with what I saw. I appeared taller, thinner and best of all, my butt looked amazing! I rushed to the cash register before they realized that I would be willing to pay double that price to look that great.

Cost Over Time-Premium jeans will quickly replace your favorite pair of jeans and you will be wearing them often which guarantees that you will get your money's worth.

Today is the day that we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. I wonder what He thinks about the way we celebrate it.

I'm sure that He is dismayed by the way we have turned His birthday in to such a commercial holiday when we spend more money than time on the ones we love.

Hopefully He is proud of the many, who use this opportunity as a time to give to the less fortunate and to shower friends, family members and neighbors with kindness and love.

I have been the recipient of quite a few good wishes, kind words and friendly smiles during this festive holiday season. If only people were more like this all of the time, myself included.

My New Year's resolution is to be friendlier all year round. I believe that friendlier people are happier people and probably healthier people too.

The Best Footwear For Your Favorite Style Jeans

A perfectly good outfit can be ruined if it isn't matched with the correct footwear. I've taken the guess work out of pairing the right footwear with different jean styles. Consider it a cheat sheet of sorts, in case you are ever at loss as to what type of shoes to wear with your jeans.

Bootcut jeans- look great with boots (surprise!) and all types of heels (wedge, stilettos etc..)

Skinny jeans & Leggings- look great with heels, flats ankle boots, sandals, flip flops and tucked into knee high boots.

straight leg jeans- look great with heels, sneakers, flip flops, sandals and flats.

Wide Leg jeans -look great with heels ( I love them with wedge heels)

A Common Sense Note About Sneakers and Flats

Sneakers and flats look great with any style jean as long as they are the correct length. If they are too long they will probably drag on the ground and you will ruin the hem.

I think sneakers look best with straight leg jeans. I personally cannot wear sneakers with skinny jeans because they would make my feet look huge.

Express Your Holiday Style With Accessories

All holidays are "working" holidays for moms when they are entertaining at home. I have come to embrace this fact and it is my honor to cook, serve, with help of course, and entertain my family members and friends.

The key is to dress accordingly. The outfit that I wear must be functional as well as fabulous and comfort is a necessity.

This Christmas, I already have my outfit all planned out. I'm going to wear a pair of... you guessed it, jeans. They will be a dressier, great fitting, dark pair called Robin's Silver Wings as shown below, in case of minor gravy stains and I'll pair them with a plain white button up blouse. Sounds pretty basic but a basic outfit is a perfect "canvas" on which you can put your individual style signature, using awesome accessories.

Holiday Accessorizing Perfection

First, I am going to wear a black crop vest over the white blouse. As mentioned in a previous post, vests are a classy way to upgrade a plain top. I am going to wear a pair of heels which look amazing with straight leg jeans because they seem to “hug” the shoes at just the right spot.

Top It Off With Jewelry

To top it all off, I'm going to pull out my favorite jewellery. The holidays are a great time wear your favorite pieces. Jewelry gives you a wonderful way to express your personality and mood. You can wear a small, elegant pair of earrings with small stones and a matching pendant. Or you can just overdose on shiny bangles , a chain with a large pendant and a pair of hoop earrings or anywhere in between.

I like the chain and pendant below. If I owned one I would wear it as a choker with the top button or two of my blouse undone to show it off.

Fashion is a great way to have fun and express yourself and the holidays are a perfect time to show off your unique style.

I had the pleasure of visiting a great fashion website called Fashion Confidential. It is based in the UK and the fashions are fabulous. There is even a fashion magazine within the site! The site has been online for three years but the magazine was just launched this past September. The best part is that accessing the magazine is completely free.

As you can imagine, I am in my glory as I peruse the “pages “ of the site, which are very well laid out and easy to navigate. The site connects you with the latest collections from the hottest designers all while using catchy titles like, Christian Laboutin:King OF Sole. There are plenty of high end multi-strap shoes , little black dresses and handbags.

But where are the jeans?

Thankfully, there are jeans all over the site. Brands like Jbrand, Current Elliot, True Religion, Paige and Seven For All Mankind. The site links readers to the exact website where they can purchase these awesome finds.

My absolute favorite was the pair below.

I love the leggings paired with the hot ankle boots. Now I know exactly how I will wear my jean leggings when I finally get them. My ankle boots are not quite as sexy though.

That is the best thing about this site. It is a wonderful resource for outfit ideas. Some of the outfits reminded me of things that I already have in my closet. If you are a busy mom like I am, or just short on time, online fashion sites are a convenient way to keep up with the latest fashion trends.
There is no need to wonder what to wear during the holidays and beyond.

Getting Ready For Christmas

First, let's not forget that this season is about the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

I read some great blog posts from some talented bloggers this morning and they put me in the Christmas spirit. It's nice to be positively influenced.

I am a notorious comparison shoppers-isn't everybody? Well, I found out the hard way that my husband isn't. It seems that my obsession with making sure that I'm getting the best possible deal was driving him nuts, this past weekend. I was completely paralyzed, worrying that somebody had it cheaper or that there would be a buy one get one free sale next week. Missing a buy one get one free sale is a trajedy and I don't have the time to come back and return stuff or get an adjustment.

Anyway, I swallowed hard and forced myself to buy a couple of toys for the kids after visiting three stores!

I thank God every day for sending me such a patient husband. He never complained but the look on his face told a different story. I bet he'll find some excuse to shop without me next weekend.

Maybe he'll pick up those True Religion jeans I was checking out at the outlet store.

Designer Bags And Premium Denim: A Match Made In Fashion Heaven

There's nothing better than the confidence boost you get when you look fierce from head to toe. You know those special days when you envisioned an outfit in your mind and when you put it on everything just fell in to place. The right shoes, a fabulous top, the head turning denim (of course), and to top it all off, the right designer handbag can have you feeling like the streets of your town, are your own personal runway.

I love it, when I have the luxury of ditching my Winnie the Pooh baby bag and matching my shoes to my handbags. If I happen to have a matching belt, then the world is mine. There's something empowering about being coordinated every now and then, even if I'm pushing a stroller and the baby bag is safely tucked away in the stroller basket.

I am not suggesting that folks should always match their shoes to their handbags. I believe that fashion is art and that your wardrobe should reflect your personal style as opposed to some arbitrary rules that so called "fashion experts" try to impose on others.

It seems like the bigger the better with regard to the handbags that celebs are carrying now.

I am sorry to report that people have begun to refer to jean leggings as "jeggings". I hate the term and I vow not to embrace it but It is my duty to keep my readers in the know.

I am, however, happy to report that, one of my favorite jean makers, Robin's Jean-yes it's jean not jeans (the designer is Robin Chretien from France)-has unveiled his take on the jean legging and they look great.

What To Wear With Denim Leggings
Denim leggings can be tastefully worn with heels as shown above or tucked into flat or heeled boots. They look great with with blazers and longer flowing tops for those of you who are more conservative or even with a blouse tucked in or out. The effect is very similar to skinny jeans.

Get Vested And Mix It Up!

While I was watching game 1 of the world series (Go Phillies! I am from New York but I live in Philadelphia and the Yanks have won enough)I heard Derek Jeter telling the pitcher to "mix it up". That's how I feel about outfits.

Sometimes we have to mix it up in order to avoid a style rut. Since I love to wear jeans, I have to pair them with some exciting tops and accessories so that I don't look like I'm wearing the same thing all the time. I don't only wear jeans but they are, obviously, my favorite.

Vests look absolutely fabulous with jeans and pants. I love them and there are many different types to choose from including, long ones and short ones made from different materials. Leather, Denim and fur vests are hot this season.

The weekend is a great time to dress it up a bit and let the compliments from your husband and/or friends start rolling in. Black and grey vests are classic pieces that you can wear forever. I am encouraging everyone to "get vested".

The most fashionable celebrities have been spotted wearing the new fall trend-denim leggings.

The best of them, look like skinny jeans but are much more comfortable due to the additional stretch material.

Are These Stretch Jeans OR Leggings That Look Like Jeans?

Well, if you must get technical, it depends on the designer. Some of denim leggings in question, like the True Religion pair below, do not have a stitch of cotton in them which means that they are not denim at all. Other designers are using the a mix of denim and stretch material to achieve the look.

Many premium denim designers believe that this denim legging trend will be with us for the next couple of seasons. I look forward to witnessing where this trend will take us.

I personally prefer the denim leggings which were designed with a commitment to look as much like jeans as possible like the Hudson pair below. I am not in to that smooth look with no pockets like the ones worn by Beyonce above.

Advantage of Denim Leggings

1. The stretch material is more comfortable than regular jeans and shouldn't cause muffin top syndrome.

2. The stretch material should fit snuggly on top of boots or inside of boots depending on your preference.
